I went in today for my one hour glucose tolerance test. They don't take a baseline blood sugar level for this one, you don't even have to fast for this test. You just show up, drink a cupful of a sugary substance, wait an hour, then have your blood drawn. I didn't think it was all that bad. I've heard other people's accounts of the process where they gag or have a hard time downing the drink in under 5 minutes. It's not even really a lot of fluid, either. Not even an entire Dixie cup.
For those of you who wonder what it tastes like, remember "Nerds" candy?
To me, the glucola solution they make you drink tastes like they dumped two boxes of orange-flavored Nerds into a cup of orange-flavored Fanta without the fizz. It went down pretty easy because they kept it chilled. I don't think it would have been so pleasant if it was room temperature. It was so sickeningly sweet that it burned my throat on the way down. Yeesh.
Baby girl seemed to like the little boost of sugar. Either that, or she got restless with me just sitting there and not moving around for the hour that I had to wait. Whatever it was, she started a little kickbox routine about 30 minutes after I drank the sweet stuff!
Wait a minute!! You only had to drink a dixie cup full? Mine was a whole 8oz container. Dude!
